How can Businesses learn from Sustainable Healthcare Model?

With the rising costs of healthcare, access to quality medical treatment has become a luxury that not everyone can afford. Private hospitals in many countries offer top-notch medical facilities and specialized treatments but at exorbitant prices that are out of reach for the majority of the population. Meanwhile, public hospitals often struggle to attract and retain the best medical professionals and are frequently overcrowded with patients seeking affordable care. This has resulted in a decline in the strategic position of hospitals in terms of accessibility, regardless of their operational excellence.

SIRIRAJ PIYAMAHARAJKARUN: INNOVATIVE HEALTHCARE MODEL FOR ACCESSIBILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY

Siriraj Hospital, Thailand's largest public hospital, has taken steps to address the issue of healthcare accessibility by creating a medical service hub called "Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun." This initiative consolidates expertise across 15 Centers of Excellence and aims to offer accessible healthcare services to the majority of the population. The core values of "Creating Sustainable Excellence, Together" guide this initiative, emphasizing the importance of building a sustainable ecosystem in which patients from all walks of life can benefit. As part of this initiative, the hospital has recently experienced a significant increase in revenue. To further support the medical community and assist patients in need, Siriraj Hospital returns a portion of this revenue to the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital. This move highlights the hospital's commitment to promoting sustainable excellence in the healthcare sector and ensuring that all patients, regardless of their socioeconomic status, have access to high-quality medical care.

WHAT CAN BUSINESSES LEARN?

By creating an ecosystem that manages risks and ensures a license to operate, public hospitals like Siriraj can compete with private hospitals while still offering accessible healthcare services with high-standard quality and expertise. This model is not limited to government hospitals and can be adopted by companies looking to prioritize sustainability and community involvement over solely focusing on profit. By identifying core values and mission and building a reputation for sustainable efforts, businesses can attract customers who align with their values and contribute to the betterment of society as a whole. Such a unique positioning creates value for both People and the Planet, while also supporting long-term success of Profitability.

As we consider healthcare accessibility and sustainability, it is clear that the well-being of our wider community is a collective responsibility. On World Patient Safety Day, observed every September 17th under the guidance of the World Health Organization (WHO), we emphasize the importance of accessible healthcare that should always go hand in hand with a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of patients worldwide. By strongly focusing on a unique approach that creates value for society and the environment, businesses can firmly position themselves as leaders in their industries, fostering a loyal customer base and positively impacting the broader community.
