Strategic Thinking

The concept of strategy is not merely a process; it entails a way of thinking that guides individuals and organizations toward their goals, solutions, or objectives. For one to become a strategist, the primary aim should be cultivating the ability to think strategically. However, attaining this ability is not a straightforward endeavor, and one must start from the fundamentals. Strategic thinking necessitates both logical and critical thinking skills to anticipate potential outcomes and devise effective solutions.


“Logical thinking” refers to the process of reasoning based on factual evidence, involving an understanding of cause-and-effect relationships between different phenomena. For example, we can logically think about why it rains by understanding that moisture in the air condenses and forms clouds, which eventually fall to the ground as raindrops. Meanwhile, “critical thinking” involves analyzing information, providing logical reasoning, and making sense of the relationships between events. For instance, when it comes to understanding why traffic gets congested during rainy weather, critical thinking can help us realize that the rain affects road conditions, making them slippery and reducing visibility, ultimately causing traffic to slow down. Lastly, “strategically thinking” combines the two aforementioned skills to assess a situation and find the best solution to address a problem. While most people tend to complain and blame the rain when traffic gets congested during a downpour, strategic thinkers will figure out ways to reach their destination as quickly as possible.


All in all, logical thinking is the basis for all three types of thinking, as it involves reasoning based on evidence and facts. Critical thinking goes beyond logical thinking by enabling an objective evaluation of arguments, whereas strategic thinking entails anticipating potential problems and developing contingency plans to tackle them. Together, these types of thinking allow strategists within the organization to have a comprehensive view of the organization and its environment, empowering them to validly prioritize objectives and resources, make informed decisions, and adapt to changing circumstances. In addition, these types of thinking can facilitate effective communication of complex ideas and plans to different stakeholders, including executives, employees, consumers, and investors.

Strategy is a concept that extends beyond the business world as it encompasses a way of thinking that can be applied to various aspects of our daily lives. By thinking strategically, individuals can increase their efficiency and effectiveness in achieving their goals, while also becoming more resilient when it comes to unexpected changes in certain circumstances.
